Here's a similar question:

Quote
A violin string is 42 cm long. It sounds the musical note A (440 Hz) when played without fingering. How far from the end of the string should you place your finger to play the note C (523 Hz)?

Answer:

f = 1/2L)( sqrt(T/u)

so f1/f2 = L2/L1

L2 = 440*0.42/523

L2 = 35.3 cm

so it 42-35.3 = 6.7 cm from the other end
