Post by: mamabearkl2014 on Jul 12, 2014
. A recent study reports that older adults who got regular physical exercise (as measured by a pedometer) experienced fewer symptoms of depression, even when tested 2 years later. Following are hypothetical data similar to the results obtained in this study.

a.   Calculate the mean and standard deviation for each group of scores

b.    Based on the statistics from part a, does there appear to e a difference between the two groups?

Regular Exercise    No regular exercise
1   5
3   4
4   6
3   3
5   5
2   7
3   6
4   6

a. Calculate the mean and standard deviation for each group of scores

regular
mean= (1+3+4+3+5+2+3+4) /8 =25/8=3.125
Stdev= ( ( 1-3.125)^2 +(3-3.125)^2+…..)^.5
= .166

not regular
Mean= 5+4+6+3+5+7+6+6/8 =42/8 =5.25
Stdev= ((5-5.25)^2+(4-5.25)^2+…)^.5 =1.199

b. Based on the statistics from part a, does there appear to e a difference between the two groups?
Yes. Mean and std dev for no regular group is higher
