Title: What aspects of life in a bog may have favoured selection for carnivory in plant
Post by: colleen on Jan 31, 2012
What aspects of life in a bog may have favoured selection for carnivory in plants? Why are carnivorous plants relatively rare in all other types of communities, such as temperate forest, salt marshes, and even the tropical forest?

Since decomposition in bogs is very slow, soils contain little nitrogen that is available for use by plants. Carnivorous plants obtain nitrogen from the tissues of the insects they catch. In other communities, where available soil nitrogen is higher, there is less selection for carnivory.
