The movement of water by osmosis is solely based on the solute concentration on either side of the semi-permeable membrane. Since the semi-permeable membrane is permeable only to certain solutes which are either small enough to diffuse through the pores or lipid soluble such as fats and steroids and entirely permeable to water. A high solute concentration such as sodium for example on one side of the membrane would attract water, because water moves from an area of high to low concentration generating osmotic pressure until their is no net diffusion.
