Title: Bond order for species. Molecular orbital
Post by: fodog414 on Oct 27, 2014
The electron configuration of a particular diatomic species is
 (sigma2s)^2 (anti-bonding sigma*2s)^2 (sigma 2p)^2 (pi2p)^4 (anti-bonding pi*2p)^1
 What is the bond
order for this species?
A) 4
B) 3.5
C) 3
D) 2.5
E) 2

could someone explain the pi2p^4 orbit? Is that supposed to be pi2p^2?

Hey fodog414, see if the answer can be found in one of the two attachments. Answers are at the end of the document in case you're wondering!

I think i have a small handle on MO diagrams but i'm just getting confused on the pi2p^4 does that ^4 signify 4 electrons in the orbit?

Hey fodog414, could you provide us an update on the solution to this?

Ya of course I thought I replied to all the questions

Its actually quite easy

there are 8 bonding electrons and there are 3 antibonding electrons

so its 8-3/2

which is 2.5
D

Oh nice, so skip5284 was right! Will mark as solved.
