Post by: mattiewal on Mar 12, 2012
I have several other problems that I cannot find the answers for in Exercise 6, will some help please?

15.   Describe how the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems work together to regulate the heart rate.
16.   What do you think would happen to the heart rate if the vagus nerve were surgically cut?

Question 15. Describe how the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems work together to regulate the heart rate.
An increase in in Sympathic stimulation increases the rate and forcefullness of contraction ( fight or Flight) and a decrease in sympathetic stimulation decreases heart rate and contraction. The cardiovascular system  center in the  Medulla Oblongata reacts or responds to increase in pressure( signaled by Barorecptors)  by increasing the parasympathetic stimulation and decreasing sympathetic stimulation. The result is a decrease in Heart rate and force of contraction.
Hope this help
