What basic ideas did John Dewey, Richard Ely, and Albion Small have in common?

While each focused on a different field, they all believed that scholarship should serve society. Small argued that sociologists should not simply study society, they should reform it. Ely argued in favor of government intervention in the economy. Dewey argued that Social Darwinism was nothing more than an unethical justification for privilege.
