The Classical approach to management was the first concentrated effort to develop a body of management thought. This approach recommends that managers continually strive to increase organizational efficiency to increase production.
The Classical approach to management can be broken down into two distinct areas. The first area is known as Lower-Level Management Analysis, and consists primarily of the work of Taylor, the Gilbreth's, and Gantt. The name of Lower-Level Management Analysis comes from the fact that these theorists conducted their studies on the jobs of lower level workers of an organization. The focus was on improving productivity of each individual worker through job specialization, time and motion studies, and piece-rate pay.
The second area is known as Comprehensive Analysis of Management because the studies conducted were focused on the organization as a whole. Fayol is the theorist who is best known for this administrative look at bringing order and direction to the firm. As productivity in firms increased, order was needed in the firms, and Fayol's principles of management brought that order  as well as the study of management and thus management became a career.
