Often, children and teens who come from a biracial family have to prove their authenticity to a parent or peers by adopting the clothing and cultural norms of one culture or the other. Familial and neighborhood variables also influence the teen, depending on the ethnic makeup of the neighborhood. Another factor identified by Maria Root is the phenomenon of being a military brat. If a teen is biracial and moves from place to place, it is likely to be more difficult for them to establish their own identity.
