Post by: dnlee1 on Mar 22, 2019 Elderly inmates result in higher costs to correctional facilities for a variety of reasons. They have different nutritional needs and may require special diets that must be provided. They have a variety of medical conditions that may require expensive treatment, such as hypertension, diabetes, stroke, cancer, Alzheimer disease, and emphysema. They may require procedures such as kidney dialysis or heart surgery and equipment such as dentures and glasses. They may also need assistance with physical activities such as dressing, bathing, and using the bathroom. Specially trained staff may be required to treat these offenders and prisons may have to be constructed or renovated because they were not designed for geriatric inmates.
