Title: Grass - Food of Horses, Buffaloes & Cats.
Post by: prashantakerkar on May 14, 2019

https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grass

Do the Grass eaten by Horses and Buffaloes are of the same type or a different variety ?

I have seen Buffaloes and cows eat grass which is yellow in colour while Horses eat grass which is green in colour.

Are these two different varieties of Grasses?

Also observed that Cats also like to eat a special type of Grass when their digestive system is not proper.

What is this Grass variety which the Cats like to eat?

Hay is defined as dry grass.

Do Horses, Buffaloes, Cows & Cats eat Grass as well as Hay?

Hi prashantakerkar (https://biology-forums.com/index.php?action=profile;u=849424), a few points to consider:

> Hay is dry grass -- you're right about this ✔️

> Cats are carnivores, they'll not eat anything but meat in nature.

> Animals that eat grass are called grazers (includes cows, rabbits, kangaroos, horses, etc.). They're generally herbivores.

> There are a ton of varieties of grass, but grazers generally do not discriminate. The main component of grass is cellulose, these animals are capable of harvesting the nutrients from cellulose due to the way their digestive tracts are designed.

Thank you.

Couple of questions.

1 I have seen our own Cat and other cats eating grass.
Your opinion please?

2 Do you feel grass and Hay should be available in Urban area shops?

Note : I have observed that Grass is available in
Rural areas where there is open brazen land.

I believe you, but it's not for the same reasons you and I would eat veggies. Cats may eat grass as a way of ridding their digestive tract of something unpleasant or inedible. For example, outdoor cats usually eat animals whole (like mice or small birds). When swallowed, this food introduces inedible parts (feathers, bones, etc.) into their digestive tract. Therefore, eating grass may be a way for a cat to get rid of that debris or some hair that gets swallowed during grooming which may cut down on hairballs. Important to remember that cats are OBLIGATE carnivores, which means the vast majority of their food needs to be animal protein since they cannot digest plant proteins.

Given its abundance, I don't think that's necessary, unless you're a farmer and need to store hay for the winter.

Thanks.

If the Grass & Hay are available in Urban areas -
Metropolitan cities shops, then they can be purchased by Buffaloes, Cows owners to feed them instead of being purchased from Rural areas having open brazen land transportation
to Urban areas.

Do you feel shops offering Grass & Hay in Urban metropolitan cities will not be sold in abundance?

They will not earn profits by selling Grass & Hay purchased from farmers?.

The profit margin will be very less?

In metropolitan cities, there's little to no demand for it. As you know, city dwellers here (specifically, North America) know nothing about farming nor do they own farm animals. In fact, where I come from, you can buy a ton of hay for $121 -- not bad; it's sold in rural areas because that's where you'd find the majority of your customers anyway. With that said, profits are higher where there are more farmlands, namely away from major cities. It has less to do with "profit margins", but more to do with supply and demand.

I consider cows, horses, goats as farm animals; they're rarely found in metropolitan cities. I forgot to mention that pet stores do sell hay/straw in small batches for pet rabbits/mice/etc.
