An adult and the 5-year-old boy she cares for are reading a book and discussing the illustrations together. The adult says, "Now pay attention to the dog's face. How do you think he is feeling right now?" What effect would this speech have on the little boy?

▸ The boy is too young to focus his own attention based on instructions. However, by referencing attention the adult is helping him to eventually develop this skill.

▸ The boy will answer the question correctly but he will not learn from it; the adult should have let the boy figure out where to place his attention by himself.

▸ Whether or not the adult asked the boy to "pay attention to the dog's face" doesn't matter; the boy is old enough to understand emotion without any scaffolding.

▸ The boy is more likely to answer the adult's question accurately since she has helped him to focus his attention in an appropriate way.
