Suggested Responses: Students should note that Piaget's theory focuses on interaction with objects in the environment as necessary for cognitive development; therefore, the specific objects in the environment - those that are present in a child's specific cultural (family, community, physical space) environment - will form the basis of his/her cognitive development. Additionally, the amount of experience a child has with the environment - how much certain skills are valued and emphasized in a particular culture - affects how quickly proficiency in particular cognitive skills is attained. Cultural differences, then, are inevitable in children's cognitive development because the culture determines the experiences with which children construct their knowledge. Students should also note, however, that many aspects of Piaget's theory do hold to some extent across various cultures and environmental conditions.
