A seven-year-old is found to exhibit the following language characteristics: She speaks quite distinctly but has trouble with certain speech sounds - "b" and "p." She has trouble repeating these accurately when a teacher asks her to say them. She has a growing vocabulary but has trouble retrieving certain words. She uses the word "thing" a lot, for example, in place of certain nouns. Sometimes she leaves endings such as "-ing" off words. Her sentences can be quite long, but she has trouble understanding certain sentence structures, as in "The boy who sat with me on the bus was angry." Explain whether this child be referred for further evaluation and special services. In your answer, clearly describe the difference between typical and atypical development in syntax, semantics, and phonology in the primary years.
