Benefits include the points that community supervision is less expensive than either jail or prison and provides an opportunity for the offender to continue working or go to school, to generate income, retain family ties, provide a stable home for dependent children, and access treatment programs. Possible problems are that the offender may commit another crime while at liberty in the community, the offender may encounter too many financial obligations, and the other household members living with the offender may be subjected to intrusions on their privacy and civil liberties.
