Three items should be clearly found in the answer. Two of those are reference to both the deprivation model and the importation model. For the former, reference should be made to the idea that prison culture develops from an attempt by inmates to acquire things they no longer have because of their incarceration. For the latter, reference should be made to the idea that prison culture results from attitudes and behavior bought to the prison by the inmates as an extension of their life before prison. Finally, characteristics of the facility itself are understood to play a role since prison culture depends in part on such organizational aspects as custody level, budgets and resources, staff training, and staff/inmate interactions.
