The same idea applies. Antiviral drugs work in two major ways, either they

1) they block the entry of the virus into the cell, or
2) prevent the drug from replicating once it has entered into the cell.

All those outlined in the link fall into one of these categories, generally.

The general idea behind modern antiviral drug design is to identify viral proteins, or parts of proteins, that can be disabled. These "targets" should generally be as unlike any proteins or parts of proteins in humans as possible, to reduce the likelihood of side effects. The targets should also be common across many strains of a virus, or even among different species of virus in the same family, so a single drug will have broad effectiveness. For example, a researcher might target a critical enzyme synthesized by the virus, but not the patient, that is common across strains, and see what can be done to interfere with its operation.

Once targets are identified, candidate drugs can be selected, either from drugs already known to have appropriate effects, or by actually designing the candidate at the molecular level with a computer-aided design program.

When I look at this animal, I don't see it as something I'd be interested in eating, and definitely not by choice. I'm not even curious about how it tastes, at the end of the day it's probably no different than beef or pork. Not sure what the fascination is of the Chinese culture eating these animals, wish someone could explain it to me.

Conceptually it isn't difficult, conceptually. In other words, theoretically the science behind it is simple if you understand the basics of biology. However, we don't know the impact it will have on the recipient 3 months, 6 months, a year from now.

Post by: bio_man on Mar 29, 2020
Comparative genomics is used to compare genomic features between different or similar organisms. It allows us to understand how the virus' genome changes from one recipient to the other, helping to predict how quickly it mutates and which parts of the species is most prone to mutation. We've already used it to identify the possible origins of the virus, where the one harvested from humans and that found natively in bats share a 99% similar genome. We will be using it forward to make future vaccines if the spread were to continue, much the same way the flu mutates every year.

Thanks for sharing these excellent resources, this document was particular informative: annurev-virology-110615-042301.pdf

Not by this organization. I don't think they have the best leadership.

ChAdOx1 is a vaccine adenovirus vector that could be used to deliver vaccine antigens where strong cellular immune responses are required. I don't see a problem using this, and it looks like they're moving forward with it:

The ChAdOx1 MERS vaccine consists of the replication-deficient simian adenovirus vector ChAdOx1, containing the MERS Spike protein antigen.

Of course, but it's more important to be realistic with the timeline. As per their website:

Vaccine development during an epidemic: Experts have estimated that it will take 12-18 months to develop a new vaccine at high speed. Under normal circumstances, most vaccine development programmes take more than five years, so this is still a considerably accelerated timescale.

So while everyone is working diligently towards a common goal, to ensure safety and health risk management issues are properly addressed, time needs to be taken to do things right.

From my experiencing working in a lab, experiments take time to conduct - weeks, months, and years. Having a journalist probe the researchers every other day certainly won't make them work any faster.

Title: Re: Antiviral agents for respiratory diseases.
Post by: bio_man on Apr 8, 2020
Hydroxychloroquine works by slowing the rate at which a virus reproduces itself. This buys time for a person's immune system to build up its own defenses to take on the coronavirus.

Using a hydroxychloroquine-azithromycin cocktail appear to have helped people recover faster and avoid the most severe symptoms of COVID-19. I'm not sure how azithromycin helps - as far as I know, it is an antibiotic. I have no idea of the mechanism involved, and how it relates to viral reproduction. At the moment the extent which azithromycin could have a benefit in treating viruses and the mechanisms behind it aren’t well understood.
