Title: How hypochlorous acid kill COVID-19?
Post by: oemBiology on Feb 12, 2021
Referring to following link, I would like to know on how hypochlorous acid kill COVID-19 and how our cells create hypochlorous acid.

"We also know about the cleaning power of bleach and are using it to wipe down surfaces to kill COVID-19. Have you ever wondered why this works? There is a chemical in the bleach which will kill pathogens, including fungus, bacteria and virus. The chemical is called hypochlorous acid. Obviously, it is not safe to inhale or ingest bleach. However, we do have an easy and safe alternative! When we put salt water (hypertonic saline) in our nose and mouth guess what our cells create? You got it, hypochlorous acid!"

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Hi oemBiology (https://biology-forums.com/index.php?action=profile;u=94679),

Our cells don't create hypochlorous acid from salt -- this is wrong information.

Bleach kills pathogens by disrupting the proteins in their outer membrane.

Bleach kills pathogens by disrupting the proteins in their outer membrane.

If Salt water is mainly disrupting the proteins in pathogens' outer membrane, I would like to know on how long is enough to disrupt the proteins in order to kill pathogens.  Since people put salt water in their nose and mouth, it stays less than a minute.

Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you very much for any suggestions (^v^)

First, I'll note that not all bacteria die in the presence of salt, therefore it isn't as potent as bleach. If a pathogen is susceptible to salt, also bare in mind that it may also have defense mechanisms in place to protect itself from these environmental fluctuations. Salt kills bacteria by sucking water out of them. In a process known as osmosis, water passes out of a bacterium so as to balance salt concentrations on each side of its cell membrane. Without water, bacterial proteins such as enzymes cannot function and eventually the cell collapses in on itself.

When we put salt water (hypertonic saline) in our nose and mouth, there is no enough time to process osmosis in order to kill pathogens.  I think that salt water just flush out anything within nose and mouth instead of killing them.  Would it make more sense?

It's still effective, but you've got the right idea. You just need to repeat it several times when you're sick so that it fulfills what it's meant to do
