Schools exist to prepare students for active and productive involvement in society. The Internet's information and communication resources have become a key component of this preparation. Schools are well-positioned to act as the primary vehicle for young people to learn the information, skills, and motivation needed to use the Internet safely, responsibly, and effectively.
Most schools rely heavily on filtering software in the mistaken belief that by implementing a technology "quick fix," they will have completed their task in this area. They have not done so. Filtering is being used as a substitute by school administrators to complete crucial functions such as education and oversight. Such misguided trust has resulted from heavy political pressure and the influence of the technology industry, which likes to believe that technical tools can cure all human issues. Concentrate on the Educational Goal The district Internet system should be used for activities that enhance education, enrichment, and career development, with limited "open access" hours available. Professional development, technical and instructional assistance, Internet-based lesson plans, and an educational website are all required by districts to support the system's educational use. The greatest method to promote safe and responsible Internet use is to ensure that teachers are prepared to lead children on interesting, educationally stimulating Internet learning "adventures." When computers are employed for such purposes, the possibility of misuse is greatly reduced. |
