I need help reconciling sympathetic hyperactivity and orthostatic hypotension in old age. How can old age be associated with hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system (increase in blood pressure, vasoconstriction and heart rate), while an increase risk in orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure and reduced vasoconstriction) is also linked to old age. Post by: SBiology on Jun 2, 2022 Actually, my biology manual says that the sympathetic nervous system becomes less efficient with old age (which can lead to orthostatic hypotension). Elsewhere, it is written that the sympathetic nervous system becomes hyperactive with old age.
Therefore, how do I reconcile this as the two are contradictory? Thank you |
