Title: I need help identifying a certain creature that popped up in a jar with sea water (details below) Post by: helpwhatisthis on Jun 25, 2022 Hi, a few weeks ago my dad put a bunch of thing he found at sea in a glass jar with sand and water and closed it up. From what we know was in there were two brittle starfishes, and yesterday my brother had the not so brilliant idea of throwing chunks of fish in there... today the britttle starfish are dead but the day before they died i noticed a pink circular jelly like thing stuck to the glass bottle (the chunks of fish were already in the jar when i noticed) as the day went by i noticed that this "circular" creature was in fact not circular but more like a worm so immediately i thought i must've been a parasite.... i really want to empty the jar but i won't do so until i know what it is and how to properly dispose of it, or keep it if it's not dangerous in any way perhaps. Anyway, I've attached some pictures. Now i must say, it does seem way bigger than what it looked like yesterday.

Post by: bio_man on Jun 25, 2022 What you're seeing here is slime molds (a.k.a plasmodial or acellular slime molds). Myxomycetes are most often found in moist, decaying litter, as is the case for your experiment. You can wash out the glass without worrying about any problems.
