In June 2016, the Parliament of Canada passed federal legislation that allows eligible Canadian adults with grievous and irremediable medical conditions to request medical assistance in dying (MAiD). The individual must be capable of making that decision. MAiD is a complex moral and ethical issue and one that is especially challenging for those who are in the mental health care field. Is mental illness a grievous and irremediable medical condition?
