1) Develop 5 hypotheses
2) Identify Independent and dependent variables
3) Identify the nature of the relationship described in the hypotheses whether its association/relationship, Causal relationship or a group difference

1) Develop 5 hypotheses

  • People who score less than 50% on their test spent no time studying for the test.
  • People who score 50% to 60% on their test spent up to 1 hour study (i.e. 0<t<=1 hours)
  • People who score 60% to 70% on their test spent up to 2 hours study (i.e. 0<t<=2 hours)
  • People who score 70% to 80% on their test spent up to 3 hours study (i.e. 0<t<=3 hours)
  • People who score more than 80% on their test spent more than 3 hours studying (i.e. t>3 hours)

2) Identify Independent and dependent variables

Dependent: Test score
Independent: Time spent studying

3) Identify the nature of the relationship described in the hypotheses whether its association/relationship, Causal relationship or a group difference

All are causal relationships.

  • Hypothesis: If sugar causes cavities, then people who eat a lot of candy may be more prone to cavities.
  • Dependent: Cavities forming
  • Independent: Sugar consumption
  • Type: Causal
  • Inferential statistics: Examine the diets of people with excessive cavities to see if sugar is the main component.
  • Hypothesis: If carrots strength eye health, then people who eat carrots daily will not need glasses.
  • Dependent: Need for eye glasses
  • Independent: Carrot consumption
  • Type: Group difference
  • Inferential statistics: Ask adults who don't wear glasses if they consume carrots. Ask another group of adults who do wear glasses how many carrots they eat.
  • Hypothesis: People with high-sugar diets are more likely to be overweight.
  • Dependent: Weight of person
  • Independent: Amount of sugar consumed daily
  • Type: Association
  • Inferential statistics: Analyze the diets of people who are overweight to see if sugar is the main component.
  • Hypothesis: Raising gas prices causes an increase in the number of people who use public transit to work.
  • Dependent: Number of people taking public transit
  • Independent: Gas prices
  • Type: Causal relationship
  • Inferential statistics: As gas prices rise, examine how many transit tickets are bought and compare it to data from when gas prices were cheaper.
  • Hypothesis: If smoking cigarettes is bad for lung health, people who smoke daily are more likely to get lung cancer
  • Dependent: Number of people who get lung cancer
  • Independent: Number of cigarettes smoked daily
  • Type: Causal relationship
  • Inferential statistics: Examine data of all people who have died of lung cancer, and whether or not they were regular cigarette smokers their entire lives.
