Title: Assuming soap to be a pure sodium stearate, give an equation

a) that shows why its solutions are alkaline.
b) for its reaction with Mg+2 in hard water.
c) for its reaction with hydrochloric acid.
 :)

Assuming a soap to be pure sodium stearate, give balanced equation to illustrate the following:?

a) Why its solutions are alkaline:
b) Its reaction with Ca+2 in hard water:

a) CH3-(CH2)16-COONa+HCl=CH3-(CH2)16-COOH + NaCl

b) 2CH3-(CH2)16-COONa+CaCO3=(CH3-(CH2)1... +Na2CO3
- the second reaction explains why soap doesn't make as many "bubbles" in hard water
hope this two reaction are enough for you.

An aqueous solution of sodium stearate will react with Ca2+ ions in hard water to give an insoluble precipitate of calcium stearate:

2 C17H35COONa(aq) + Ca2+(aq) --> (C17H35COO)2Ca(s) + 2 Na+(aq)

Hi FionaSupernova,

Could you give us a little update on what you did to tackle this problem?

Hi FionaSupernova,

Could you give us a little update on what you did to tackle this problem?

we were made to prepare soap and compare it with syndets. those were the questions in the post lab actually. the prepared soap and syndets were subjected to solutions like fe-, mg-, and ca- as well as with tap water and we were made to observe precipitates. i just discussed the results as the theories stated how things should be... though my results were quite inconsistent with the theories. i may have done the experiment wrongly too. :)
