Both gypsum and chert are chemical sedimentary rocks. They are different because of how they form. Gypsum is an evaporite mineral that is left over after a body of water dries out, this usually occurs multiple times. Chert is formed from living organisms. Diatoms and radiolarians have silica shells. When they die, the silica forms chert.
