Post by: Jofish on May 29, 2015
Magnesium sulfate reacts with barium chloride according to the following balanced equation. If 1.20 g of magnesium sulfate is allowed to react with 10.0 g of barium chloride in a water solution, what is the theoretical yield of barium sulfate?

MgSO4(aq) + BaCl2(aq) Right Arrow BaSO4(s) + MgCl2(aq)

  • 1.20g
  • 2.33g
  • 2.08g
  • 23.3g
  • 10.0g

See if this helps:

MgSO4(aq) + BaCl2(aq) → BaSO4(s) + MgCl2(aq)
Magnesium sulfate reacts with barium chloride according to the following balanced equation. How many moles of barium sulfate are formed from 10.0 g of magnesium sulfate?

MgSO4(aq) + BaCl2(aq) → BaSO4(s) + MgCl2(aq)
1.00 mol
0.0831 mol
0.166 mol
0.500 mol
0.200 mol

Possible answer:

From the balanced equation: 1mol MgSO4 will produce 1 mol BaSO4

Molar mass MgSO4120.4g/mol
10g MgSO4 = 10/120.4 = 0.0831 mol MgSO4
This will produce 0.0831 mol BaSO4 - choice b) correct.
