Sexual reproduction ensures genetic diversity through the process of crossing over. This creates a population of species that is more fit to survive, give the vast number of alleles representing each gene. In asexual reproduction, species don't have this luxury since each generation is a clone of the previous. If the species was susceptible to a virus, all others would succumb to it also.
