Title: Do you agree or disagree?

Do you agree or disagree?  Defend your decision.

"When you think about sexual reproduction, it makes no sense.  After all, evolution selects for organisms that are best fit.  In a population of sexually reproducing organisms, a mutant that reproduced asexually would increase its representation more quickly than the wild type; that is, it would have a higher fitness.  So we should expect asexual reproduction to be much more widespread among eukaryotic species than it is."

Disagree, of course. Sexual reproduction ensures genetic diversity through the process of crossing over. This creates a population of species that is more fit to survive, give the vast number of alleles representing each gene. In asexual reproduction, species don't have this luxury since each generation is a clone of the previous. If the species was susceptible to a virus, all others would succumb to it also.
