Title: What is the main difference between Parenchma, Collenchyma and Sclerenchyma? Post by: 11askaggs on Feb 1, 2012 Parenchyma cells are alive and capable of cell division. They have thin, flexible cell walls and a large central vacuole. They are frequently loosely arranged, and are used for storage (among other things).
Collenchyma cells are also alive, but they are elongated and have much thicker and less flexible cell walls. They are used for support, especially in response to mechanical stress (wind, for example). Sclerenchyma cells are dead, and are coated with a thick layer of lignin. They are used solely for support and strength. |
