Title: Balancing Redox Equations in Acidic or Basic Solutions?
Post by: buffnstuff on Apr 21, 2012
MnO4-  + SO3^2-   +....  => MnO2 + SO4^2-   + .....
What are the coefficients of the six species in the balanced equation above? Remember to include coefficients for H2O  and  OH- in the blanks where appropriate.

MnO4- + So3^2- = MnO2 + SO4^2-

2[3e- + 4H + MnO4- = MnO2 + 2H2O]
3[H2O + SO3^2- = SO4^2- + 2H + 2e-]

TOTAL IONIC: 6e- + 8H + 2MnO4- +3H2O +3 SO3^2-= 2MnO2 + 4H2O + 3 SO2^2- + 6 H+ 6 e-

NET IONIC: 2H + 2MnO4- + 3 SO3^2- = 2MnO2 + H2O + 3 SO2^2-

2 MnO4- + H2O + 3 SO3 2- -> 2 MnO2 + 3 SO4 2- + 2 OH-
