Title: Plz answer this physics question about from a section called 'Magnetism from Electricity' and explain?
Post by: julibyrd on Jun 2, 2012
A solenoid with ends marked A and B is suspended by a thread so that the core can rotate in the horizontal plane. A current is maintained in the coil so that the electrons move clockwise when viewed from end A to B. How will the coil align itself in earth's magnetic field?
For the smartass that told me to check my book for the answer, I would if I can >_>.

Someone hurry! (I have a test tomorrow)
Why would A act as south?

Check the back of the book for the answer.

A will act as south & B will act as north pole for solenoid, Thus A will be in North & B will be in South direction.

Viewing from end A to B if electrons r moving in clockwise direction so conventional current flows in anticlockwise direction. As a result of this the end A acts as a north pole of the solenoid. So solenoid will align itself in earth's magnetic field in such a way that its north pole will face magnetic south pole of the earth's magnetic field and its south pole will face magnetic north pole of the earth's magnetic field.
