Title: How to find the maximum and minimum value of this cubic function?
Post by: fiveftfury on Sep 2, 2012
y=x^3 - 8

I know it's simple, but I do I even try to get a derivative out of it?

OK Ameh...  if you take the derivative of it you just end up with 3x^2 =0  so 0 should be one of your extrema but it is just an inflection or saddle point.  If you factor this cubic you see that (x-2)*(x^2 +2x +4) .  But this only tells you that at x = 2 y = 0.  Graphing it shows you that the max is +oo and the min is -oo.
