Title: ATP calculation- how many ATP in 10 pyruvic acid?
Post by: meygancloe on Sep 10, 2012
Hi, can somebody tell me when 10 molecules of pyruvic acid are broken down completely to CO2 and H2O in the presence of oxygen, how many molecules of ATP will be produced? Thank you!

 :)  Hi...

Each pyruvic acid will yield 2 ATP...When glucose is broken into an a 3-carbon aldehyde and a 3-carbon ketone, it will need to use 2 ATP in the first part of the glycolytic pathway.  Then, it will make two ATP from each piece of 3-carbon halfs to create an overall excess of 2ATP.  So, 10 will give 2x10 pyruvate = 20 ATP
