Light energy is so powerful that a 24 step procedure is required to harness it.  In a like manner, respiration, to utilize that energy, a similar multistep procedure is required.  Photosynthesis splits water, energizes the electrons and puts them on carbon.  Respiration removes the energy and puts the electrons back to form water.
