Listen to Posterior Thorax Breath Sounds: Begin at the apex of the heart (right above the clavicle) and move downward. Assess the right and left upper lobes at the 2nd intercostal space. Then, at the 4th intercostal space, evaluate the right middle lobe and the left upper lobe. Finally, at the 6th intercostal space (midaxillary), assess the right and left lower lobes. Listen to Anterior Thorax Breath Sounds: Start above the clavicles and move downward. Pay attention to the same lung areas as mentioned in step 2. Instruct the Client to Raise Arms: Have the patient raise their arms, allowing you to access the posterior side of the chest. Ensure the scapulae are separated. Listen to Lateral Thorax Breath Sounds: Auscultate the lateral lung fields. Compare Breath Sounds Over Right and Left Sides of Posterior Thorax: Make side-by-side comparisons to identify any differences in breath sounds. |
