Title: Why is a solvent needed in the bromination of an alkene? Post by: lewis on Sep 19, 2012 Propene and bromine are not miscible. In order to react, they must be able to diffuse together in the same phase. A solven therefore places them in the same phase and allows them to diffuse together.
