Title: I have read several definitions of what an allele is, but none of them make sense to me?

Is there any way to describe what in the world an allele is in very simple, easy to understand terms? "Alternate forms of a gene" means nothing to me.

Do you not understand the word "alternate"?  That's a simple word.

If this is one sequence observed in a population:

AACTGTACTATGTGAT

and this sequence is also observed in the population

AACTGTATTATGTGAT

then the population has two different alelles at that point in the genome.
