Title: Math problems help: solving variable?
Post by: rjandmj82 on Oct 11, 2012
Can somone help me with the following problems and show step by step how to get the answer?      Solve for the variable:                                                                                                                  1. 2x-(5-x)=x-9
2. 2/3t +26=-37
3. 1/2(8-x)=2/3(x+9)
4. 3r-2(2r-1)=5(2r-4)
5. -4y+2-2(3y+2)=18
6. 5x+3+5(-2x-1)=23
7. 2x+2(5x-7)=10
8. 3(y+2)-1=5-(y-2)

Open up the brackets
1) 2x-5+x=x-9  --->    (2x+x)-5=x-9  ---->  3x-5=x-9  --->  3x=(x-9)+5  ---->  3x=x-4 --->  2x= -4 ----> x= -2
Bit quicker this time...
2) (2/3t)=-63  ---->  2=3t(-63)  ---->   3t=2/-63 ---->  t= -2/189
3) 4-(1/2)x = (2/3)x+6  ---->   4= (7/6)x +6  ------>   -2 = (7/6)x   -------->  x= -12/7
4) 3r-4r+2=10r-20 ----->  2=11r-20 ----->  11r=22  ----> r=2
5) -4y+2-6y-4=18  ---->  -10y-2=18 ---->  -10y=20  y=-2
6) 5x+3-10x-5=23 --->  -5x-2=23  ------>  -5x=25    --->  x=-5
7) 2x+10x-14=10  ---->  12x=24  ---->  x=2
8) 3y+6-1= -5-y+2  --->  4y=-8  ---->  y=-2
