Instinct or innate behaviour is the inherent inclination of a living organism towards a particular complex behaviour. Instincts are inborn complex patterns of behaviour that exist in most members of the species, and should be distinguished from reflexes, which are simple responses of an organism to a specific stimulus, such as the contraction of the pupil in response to bright light or the spasmodic movement of the lower leg when the knee is tapped.
Reflexes are stimulus-driven behaviours. They cannot be spontaneous. They have to be something in the outside world that triggers them. They are usually reasonably simple behaviours that don't last long.
Instincts are not necessarily evoked by stimuli. They can be responsible for spontaneous behaviours, and could be more complex behaviours that last longer periods of time.
