In Cultural Diversity in the United States, "The Amish: Gemeinschaft Community in a Gesellschaft Society," describes the way of life of the Amish. In 2006, several students at an Amish school were murdered by a mentally ill individual. On the anniversary of that event, the Amish refused to have any memorial ceremony to commemorate this tragic occasion. Why do you think this was their decision?

The Amish make live in a very close-knit and intimate community that has tried to maintain a separation from the modern culture (Gesellschaft) as much as possible. If they had held memorial services for the slain children, their community would have been invaded by every news agency in the Western world, including foreign correspondents, all the major networks, the press, and other mass media. This would have been in direct conflict with their desire to maintain an independent lifestyle that is not compromised, corrupted, or influenced by the modern world.
