Title: How does the first ionization energy and the second vary with atomic number?
Post by: julia.k18 on Nov 1, 2012
We did an experiment at school on the ionization energy of a noble gass and used argon, we then had to write up the experiment and this is one of the last questions. Help and oppinions would be greatly valued even if you arent sure your answers are correct.

as you go down a group on the periodic table the first ionazation energy decreases. As you go across the perodic table the first ionization energy increases. Noble gases for exaple are all the way to the right of the perodic table and therefore won't want to give up a electron making the first ionization energy very high. Also the seond ionization energy must be higher than the first since the element will not want to give up another electron, so it will be harder to take the electron away.
