Your friends Sam and Alice have a 3-year-old daughter, Ashley. Alice stays at home with Ashley during the day while Sam is at work. Often in the evening, Ashley will say “Mom, Mom, Mom” repeatedly before Alice responds to her. Sam cannot understand why Alice keeps ignoring Ashley. When Ashley says “Dad” he always responds right away. How would you explain what’s happening, using what you know about the selective nature of attention, orienting responses and habituation?
