Gravitational field strength g = GM / R²

where G is the universal gravitational constant; M is the mass and R is the radius of the planet

g = 6.67 ×10^-11 * 4.87 × 10^24 / (6.05×10^6)²

g = 8.87 m/s²

------------------------------------
How? Why?

Gravitational force (F) between two masses (M) and (m) is given by

F = GMm / R²

when M is a planet, and m is an object on the surface, we have a special name for (F).
We call (F) the weight of (m).

Weight = mg
So:

mg = GMm / R²

(m) appears on both sides and cancels out, leaving:

g = GM / R²
