Post by: treehouse on Nov 10, 2012 it would take hundred or thousands (or longer) of years for a radioactive particle to decompose or become inactive in the sediment, but it depends on what the elemental parts are. Some side affects are cancerous tumors and birth defects aka gene mutation on people and animals. Some plants would be unable to grow in the contaminated soil, and if they can survive it would not be long as they themselves would be contaminated by ions picked up from the soil.
