For each of these Lewis symbols,(Figure 1) indicate the group in the periodic table in which the element X belongs:

The dots are representing the outer shell electrons of the atom. Generally when you have such exercises, you search only the main groups (1A,2A,3A-8A)*.
The Main Group number will tell you the number of electrons in its outermost shell. (this applies only for the main groups.) So you count the dots and find the group.



*Note that there are groups other that the main groups (these are the elements of the blocks d and f of the periodic table). Almost all of these elements has two electrons on the outer shell. But (as I know) Lewis symbols are very rarely used to represent these elements.
