In the opening passage, the author describes the structure and social control that Amsterdam authorities have over prostitutes, as well as their medical checkups, certificates of operation, set prices, and retirement benefits. Answers will vary, but it is likely that many students will argue that Americans would continue to reject legalized prostitution. Reasons include the following:
(1) a strong rebuttal by feminists that prostitution degrades women;
(2) the inability for lawmakers to introduce legislation to legalize prostitution without ruining their political careers;
(3) strong Judeo-Christian mores;
(4) cultural tradition that associates prostitution with that which is undesirable.
