As the chorion develops, it forms outgrowths called the chorionic villi, which are initially found around the entire surface of the chorion. However, as the pregnancy progresses, chorionic villi grow only in the direction of the stratum functionalis layer of the endometrium and do not continue to surround the other membranes and the embryo. By late week four of development, the chorionic villi are blended with the stratum functionalis layer and begin to form the principal embryonic part of the placenta.
