At some point during the dilation stage, the amnion ruptures and releases the amniotic fluid, which is the event known as the "water breaking" or "rupture of membranes." If the amnion does not rupture on its own by the end of this stage, it may need to be ruptured manually. Additionally, the cervix thins and dilates as the fetus' head is forced against the cervix. Toward the end of the dilation stage, the fetus' head enters the true pelvis and the fetus rotates so that its head can pass through the pelvic outlet.
