(1) The Gray Panthers organized in 1970 to combat ageism in all its forms, including discrimination against the young as well as the old. They currently total approximately 20,000 members. (2) The AARP has a membership of 39 million and is the largest and most politically powerful organization that champions the needs of older citizens.
