A gas containing both hydrogen molecules and helium atoms has a temperature of 300 K. How does the average speed of the hydrogen molecules compare to the helium atoms?

Helium is monoatomic. While Hydrogen is diatomic.

Therefore, Since the molecular weight Helium is 2 and a diatomic Hydrogen is 2. I believe the speeds should be exactly the same.

EDIT: Here is the math involved.

velocity (particle) = sqrt(3RT/M) where R= gas constant (8.314 kJ/kg*K), T=temperature, M=molar mass.

velocity (hydrogen)= sqrt(3(8.314)(300)/2) = 61.1 m/s
velocity (helium) = sqrt(3(8.314)(300)/2)= 61.1 m/s
