Title: How long do Erythrocytes and Neutrophils (cells) last in circulation?
Post by: leonardyi on Dec 14, 2012
I heard erythrocytes live 120 days
and Neutrophils live 7-8hours
this doesnt sound right to me

That sounds about right, neutrophils generally only live for a very short span, a few days, something between 6 hours to 2 days, neutrophils often die when a virus infects the cell so the virus can't spread and so they are constantly being produced in the bone marrow.

Yeah, those numbers do seem right. The erythrocyes are longer lived due to the obvious need of oxygen in the body, but due to wear and tear, they are degraded by the spleen after approximately 120 days, with some parts (such as iron) being recycled via enterohepatic circulation.

The numbers are about right.  Neutrophils are involved with acquired immune response and when involved with foreign antigens will undergo apoptosis.  Foreign antigens are pretty common.  On the other hand RBC's are like any normal cell, don't under go apoptosis but only live for about 4 months do to not having a nucleus to maintain structure and hence will breakdown in the spleen.
